You do not need to buy Guitar Pro to open a supported Guitar Pro file in Green Guitarist Studio. Find a downloadable tab, save it to your device, and bring it into the free web studio or Windows app.
New to the studio? Try the included Green horizon study first. It is an original neoclassical practice piece with lead and rhythm tracks, chords, and passages reaching fret 18. No download or account is needed.
What are Guitar Pro tabs?
Tablature, usually called a tab, tells you which string and fret to play. On a standard six-string guitar, the six lines represent the strings. The top line is the thin, high E string. Numbers tell you the fret: 0 means an open string, 3 means the third fret. Numbers stacked vertically are played together.
A Guitar Pro file is a musical score that can also store timing, tuning, separate instrument tracks, and techniques such as bends and slides. That structured information lets Green Guitarist Studio play the score and synchronize the tablature, virtual fretboard, and suggested finger positions. The sound is a playback interpretation of the score, not the original recording.
Look for .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx, or .gp. Green Guitarist Studio supports tested Guitar Pro 3 through 8 format families. A future or protected file with the same extension is not automatically compatible. See file compatibility.
A PDF, screenshot, plain-text tab, chord sheet, or audio recording is different. Renaming one to .gp will not turn it into a playable score. Choose a Guitar Pro download instead of PDF or Power Tab (.ptb) for this workflow.
Where can I find free files?
Ultimate Guitar: look for the Guitar Pro version
Search Ultimate Guitar for a song and artist. Choose a result labeled Guitar Pro rather than a text tab, chord sheet, or Official tab. Its support guide describes a Download button below the score. Use the website in your browser; this download feature is not available in the Ultimate Guitar mobile app.
- Open the Guitar Pro version of the song.
- Scroll below the score and look for Download with a Guitar Pro extension.
- Sign in if requested, then save the file to your device.
- If that version requires payment or has no download, try another freely offered version or one of the sources below.
Official tabs cannot be downloaded. Free viewing and a downloadable file are not the same thing. Access requirements can change. These steps follow Ultimate Guitar's download instructions and its Official tab policy.
Guitar Pro's own free lessons and tab pack
The Guitar Pro lesson library includes articles with downloadable Guitar Pro exercises, riffs, and arrangements. Start with eight guitar exercises with downloadable .gp files. Look for the article's Download tabs section.
There is also an official free Guitar Pro tabs pack. Its form asks for your email and agreement to receive newsletters and promotional offers, so read the signup choices before submitting. The pack contains practice material; it is not a promise that every commercial song is available free.
Artists and guitar teachers
Check an artist's own website or the resource links under a lesson you enjoy. Some teachers provide their own Guitar Pro exercises for free. Look for an explicitly offered Guitar Pro download and check whether access is free, requires an email, or belongs to a paid course.
What about Songsterr?
Songsterr is another place to explore tabs, but its current terms list Guitar Pro downloads under the paid Songsterr Plus plan. Do not assume that a tab you can view for free can also be exported for free.
Open your download and start practicing
- Find the file. On Windows, check Downloads. On iPhone or iPad, check Downloads in the Files app. On Android, check Downloads in your file manager. If you received a ZIP archive, extract it first and select the Guitar Pro file inside.
- Open the studio. Visit the web studio or launch the Windows app. Choose Open tab and select the file. On a phone, open Tools if the file controls are tucked away.
- Choose the guitar track. A file can contain lead, rhythm, bass, and drums. Select the part you want, and check its tuning before playing.
- Start slowly. Try 50% speed, loop one or two bars, and enable count-in. Add Ghost fingers and Chord anticipation when you want suggested hand positions.

If something does not work
- No download button: check that you opened a Guitar Pro version on the source's website. An Official tab or in-app viewer may not offer a downloadable file.
- The file will not open: check its extension, extract any ZIP archive, and download it again from the source. A saved webpage or PDF is not a Guitar Pro score.
- The notes sound wrong: check the track, tuning, capo instructions, and tab version. Community transcriptions and suggested fingerings can contain mistakes.
- Still stuck? Contact support with the app version, file extension, exact error, and the source page link.
Use files that the creator or provider permits you to download and use. Follow the source's terms and retain credits. A free download does not automatically grant permission to redistribute the arrangement. Green Guitarist Studio links to these independent providers and does not host their song catalogs.
